Emotions in Combination

It is important at this juncture, as a point of clarification, to understand that for any emotional experience multiple purposes may be underway. Specifically, while one may experience threat (a version of fear) in the face of an affront by another person, this negative experience provides feedback to the individual that the environment is not currently safe and that superiority feelings are threatened. It is also associated with a communication of concern to others (and the self), and serves to activate hypervigilance, which functions to enhance awareness of the environment. Thus, emotions serve as signal and action motivator. To be sure, the emotional response and the action are not always the same. While the feedback felt is threat, the energizer may be felt as anger, implemented as a means of driving behaviors necessary to remove the source of threat. In either case, the emotions felt are disjunctive and compel compensatory efforts to bring about or return to a “felt plus.” We might then argue that all negative emotions are experienced in the service of positive emotions. Negative emotions signal a minus situation (need for protection) and compel the necessary behaviors to alter the situation and return to or achieve a positive state (i.e., enhancement); that is the Z in the X ⇨ Y ⇨ Z model. This point should become clearer as the purpose of various emotional reactions is discussed.

Before moving on to describe distinct emotions, it is useful to identify two general cases of emotional expression.
